Dear visitor,
Crises cause suffering but may also hold seeds of opportunity. The Dutch famine of 1944 – 1945 was a humanitarian disaster at the end of the second world war that starved an entire nation. Decades later it provided important scientific insights into how human beings are shaped by their early environment. These insights are now used to build healthier en more just societies.
As a scientist, and daughter of two hungerwinter babies, I not only wanted to share the insights from the study that we have worked on in the past 25 years, but also tell the fascinating life stories of people who participated in the study. Together with Dutch-American journalist Ronald van de Krol I wrote the book: “Babies of the Hungerwinter”. It initially appeared in Dutch but has been updated and translated and is now freely available on this page.
Kind regards,
Tessa Roseboom
